Majority of Connecticut’s population are second generation European descent mainly from Italy, Ireland, Poland, and Quebec. People from non-Yankee ancestry have excelled in fields like politics. In 2000 about 9.1 % of the total population were black while 9.4% were Hisanic or Latino origin. In 2000, Connecticut had 9,639 American Indians, up from 7,000 in 1990, 82,313 Asians, and 1,366 Pacific Islanders.
