Introduction New Britain was incorporated as a parish under the name New Britain Society in 1754. In 1850 it was chartered as a township and it became a city only in 1871 after which it was separated from the nearby township of Berlin in Connecticut. It is known as the “Hardware City” because of its dominant household-hardware industry. Some important attractions of the city are the park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the center of the city and a museum of American Art.
