Connecticut is located in New England in the northeastern US. It ranks 48th in size among the 50 states covering a total area of 5,018 sq mi (12,997 sq km) of which 4,872 sq mi (12,619 sq km) is comprised of land and 146 sq mi (378 sq km) of inland water.

Connecticut is bordered on the North by Massachusetts; on the East by Massachusetts and Rhode Island; on the South by New York; and on the West by New York. The state's geographic center is East Berlin in Hartford County with a boundary length of 328 mi (528 km) and a shoreline of 253 mi (407 km).

Easy connectivity from New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts makes it an excellent weekend getaway for many tourists. The spectacular view that Litchfield Hills provide is a major draw among many visitors. Hartford has many historic buildings like Old State House, the Mark Twain home, and the New England Air Museum. Other chief attractions in Connecticut include Bushnell Park, the oldest public park, Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public arts museum in America, Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport.

Origin of State Name: From the Mahican word quinnehtukqut, meaning "beside the long tidal river."

Nickname : The Constitution State (official in 1959); also, the Nutmeg State. Capital: Hartford. Entered Union: 9 January 1788 (5th).
